This painting was inspired by me and many female bodied people I know.
Recently, I had gained some weight so quickly, that (along with some incredibly intense emotions), I thought I was pregnant. I'm not, it turns out sometimes that's just what being human is like. This, plus an on going identity crisis in relation to my ever changing body--inspired this painting.
I thought originally it would be funny to name this "Not Pregnant," but I figured "As I Am," is more fitting. Because it's not actually about what I'm not (pregnant or other thoughts that come with a growing body), but what I am: someone with a body and a belly.
Each Helmstetter painting comes with a certificate of authenticity. This painting will be ready to go to it's new home when finished drying between September and November.
